Plum Creek is a Texas historical novel set in the nineteenth-century. Billy McCulloch, a fifteen-year-old from Caldwell County, Texas, accompanies a former Texas Ranger, two of his uncles, and a former slave on a quest to rescue fourteen-year-old Martha. At this time Comanches in Texas were a scourge on settlers—she had been captured by a band of renegades who killed her family led by a half-breed Comanche killer. The pursuit is set against a backdrop of post-Civil War Texas. As Billy and the older men ride, Texas is emerging into a new age around them.
